Climate Hope - ebook

From the website,
"In the spring of 2007, after Energy Department analyst Erik Shuster circulated a document revealing that 151 new coal-fired power plants were slated for construction, climate scientists sounded the alarm. Coal is the most carbon-intensive and plentiful of the fossil fuels. If the wave of massive new facilities was built, there would be little chance of preventing greenhouse gases from reaching truly dangerous levels.
In response to the crisis, hundreds of local and regional groups, along with a handful of national groups, rose to the challenge of blocking the wave of proposals. Climate Hope: On the Front Lines of the Fight Against Coal reveals for the first time the organizing methods and political tactics that enabled underdog activists in state after state to take on and defeat Big Coal, one of the most politically dominant industries in America. By late 2009, following two years of intense mobilization, opponents had derailed at least 109 proposed plants, bringing the coal boom to a sputtering halt.
Here are some of the activists, scientists, and political leaders profiled in the book, along with the coal executives they opposed:
  • Attorney Carol Overland, whose startling revelations of runaway costs eviscerated proposed coal plants in Minnesota and Delaware.
  • Coal baron “Buck” Harless, who rallied his industry to win West Virginia for George Bush in the 2000 election, ensuring that destructive mining practices would continue unabated for eight years.
  • Navajo activist Elouise Brown, whose impromptu blockade in subzero weather turned the tide against Blackstone billionaire Steve Schwarzmann’s Desert Rock power plant.
  • Climatologists James Hansen and Pushker Kharecha, whose calculations identified a phase-out of coal as the key measure capable of staunching climate chaos.
  • Kansas governor Kathleen Sebelius, who risked political suicide by repeatedly vetoing the Sunflower coal plant.
  • Coal flak Bob Henrie, who masterminded the industry’s “clean coal” campaign.
  • Organizer Ted Glick, whose Washington, D.C., hunger strike and Vietnam-era organizing skills inspired and instructed a new generation of activists.
  • Youth activists Hannah Morgan, Kate Rooth, and scores of other direct action protesters who conducted lock-down blockades at mines and coal plants, despite repeated police use of pepper spray, taser guns, and pain compliance holds.
  • Attorney Bruce Nilles, who forged the Sierra Club’s pioneering campaign against coal while most other national environmental groups sat on their hands.
  • Benedictine monk Terrance Kardong, whose 30-year fight to halt the spread of strip mining in North Dakota culminated in a “win for the mouse.”
  • Rainforest Action Network leader Mike Brune, whose organization’s protests against banks exposed the coal industry’s financial underbelly.
  • Organizers Dana Kuhnline and Sierra Murdoch, whose Power Past Coal campaign sparked over three hundred grassroots protests.

The victory of the anti-coal movement is a bright spot in the worldwide efforts against global warming. The success of its organizing methods provides an inspiring example of ordinary people mobilizing, fighting, and winning."

The Conservative Nanny State - ebook

From the website, "Economist Dean Baker debunks the myth that conservatives favor the market over government intervention. In fact, conservatives rely on a range of “nanny state” policies that ensure the rich get richer while leaving most Americans worse off. It’s time for the rules to change. Sound economic policy should harness the market in ways that produce desirable social outcomes – decent wages, good jobs and affordable health care."

RiP! A Remix Manifesto - documentary

This film is about "the changing concept of copyright."  The mash-up artist Girl Talk is featured prominently.

I would say that this is a surprisingly innovative and inspiring documentary, providing sound arguments to show that as culture and technology changes, so too should concepts and laws.  Please visit http://ripremix.com/ to buy this film on DVD, buy or rent it on iTunes, or to donate.  You can also visit that link to download the film for any price that you decide you'd like to pay (even no amount).

Zeitgeist trilogy - documentaries

I've found these documentaries to be very interesting, and they have developed some what of a cult following, particularly among people on the Internet.  All three deal with different subjects; some topics include the US monetary system, globalization, social change, conspiracy theories, religion, human nature, natural resources, and economics.

Personally, I do not normally suggest the first film because it has many unsubstantiated conspiracy theories.  The second and third film have become two of my favorite documentaries.  But, I will let you be the judge.  These three films have been released for free on the Internet.  The main page for the films is at http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com/.

Free Culture:  How Big Media Uses Technology and the Law to Lock Down Culture and Control Creativity

This ebook was released on the Internet under the Creative Commons license.  From Wikipedia:  "Professor Lessig analyzes the tension that exists between the concepts of piracy and property in the intellectual property realm in the context of what he calls the present 'depressingly compromised process of making law' that has been captured in most nations by multinational corporations that are interested in the accumulation of capital and not the free exchange of ideas."  Visit the website for more information:  http://www.free-culture.cc/index.html

Earthlings - feature length animal rights documentary

This documentary absolutely changed my life.  Released in 2005 and lasting for 95 minutes, this film delves into the realities of the meat industry, animal experimentation, and all other areas that involve the exploitation of animals.  Earthlings is probably the most violent and disturbing film you will ever see.  I highly recommend it to anyone out there that professes at least a minute love of animals.

Welcome to Radically Free

This site will feature downloads and online videos for people that consider themselves "radicals."  There are many types of radicals in the world.  The types of radicals that will feel most at home here will be those political "leftists":  liberals, socialists, communists, anarchists, left-leaning libertarians, and those wishing for social justice and equality in general.

Some may ask why I would post free stuff on a blog when they can be found all over the internet.  That may be true, but some people may fear being "caught" downloading material that has a copyright.  The RIAA, the MPAA, etc. have succeeded in gaining enormous influence and power, going as far as sometimes being able to tell what people download through their ISP.  Many of us feel that this is an egregious assault on our individual privacy.  That is where this site comes into play.  Everything featured on this site is 100% legal and free to download or view.  These downloads have been released by the authors/artists/directors/publishers for free.  Please feel free to re-post anything you see on this site.

And, of course, if I have mistakenly posted something that is not legal and you are the artist/author/publisher, please email me and I will happily remove it.
